Ruedi Waelchli, DVM

Ruedi Waelchli started his veterinary career in a large animal practice in the Swiss mountains right after graduating from the veterinary college at the University of Zurich in Switzerland in 1976. While in practice, he worked on a research project to obtain the Drmedvet degree. In 1978, he moved to Canada to work at the University of Guelph as an intern in the Theriogenology department, and to complete a Master’s thesis. During that time, he also prepared for the licensing examination for international veterinarians, which he passed in 1981. From 1982 to 1984, he worked at the Dufferin Veterinary Services in Orangeville. In 1984, he moved back to the Zurich Veterinary College, where he was in charge of the Ambulatory Field Clinic until 1993. The main workload consisted of dairy cattle, mare reproduction and neonatal diseases. During that time, he also completed a research project to obtain a degree equivalent to a PhD. In 1993, he and his family moved back to Canada and he took a research position at the Ontario Veterinary College with a focus on embryo development in horses. In 1996, he reduced the research work load to 50% and started to work at the Arthur Veterinary Clinic for the other half of the week until in 2006, when he moved back to Dufferin Veterinary Services. He has been working there full-time since 2015. He enjoys all aspects of large animal practice even though sometimes he would rather be hiking in the Swiss mountains.
