Ryan Penno, DVM

Dr. Penno grew up in a sleepy rural town in Eastern Ontario, Canada. Ryan’s family always had pets growing up, and after riding horses for a couple of years he decided that he wanted to be a veterinarian. Throughout high school he gained experience volunteering at a veterinary clinic and really enjoyed working with the animals, especially the horses.

Summers while attending The University of Guelph were spent in the wilds of Canada’s forests planting trees. After applying to and being accepted by the Ontario Veterinary College (also at the University of Guelph), Ryan spent many overnight foal watch shifts taking care of intensive cases. During the summer of his junior year, an externship in the foothills of the Canadian Rockies doing vet work on the large ranches that dot the countryside solidified a love for rural areas and large animal medicine.

Ryan completed an internship in equine medicine and surgery at Washington State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 2003. Here he refined his diagnostic skills, and found the time to meet his wonderful wife Kristin, an avid horse person and small animal veterinarian who specializes in alternative and complementary therapies. After spending two years in Western Canada working as an equine veterinarian Ryan and Kristin moved to upstate New York where he joined Oakencroft and furthered his lameness diagnostic skills and became certified in veterinary spinal manipulation. Kristin has her own practice in nearby Clarksville, Alternative Veterinary Therapies.

Ryan, Kristin, and their daughter Madeleine live on a small farm in Albany County with their horses Makai, Lily, Pippa, and Will along with their dog, Clementine. (Source)
