Horses are brilliant puzzles – and I like puzzles. With over 20 years experience working full=time with horses, Osteopathy is my latest piece to help unravel the puzzle of the horse. Training, coaching and working with a herd of up to 22 horses helped me see the difference between a behaviour response and a pain response, Osteopathy considers the whole horse from the feet to the heart, it was a natural fit.
Osteopathy is a hands-on manual therapy where movement helps define what is a primary dysfunction versus a symptom. On the ground and ridden through observation and palpation I assess the range of motion of each joint to understand the whole body, identifying what is working well and what may need help. Osteopathic articulation and tissue manipullation are intended to not only impact the joints but all the associated muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves and fascia.
Mobility improves movement of the synovial fluids of the joints, which in turn increases blood and lymph flow, ultimately reaching all the systems in the horse. With each horse, the challenge is to find the source of a lameness, or as is often the case answer the question “Why is my horse not quite right?” The goal is to help the horse adjust itself.
A requirement for The London College of Animal Osteopathy program was to produce a final thesis. The topic I chose “Osteopathy in treating mysterious hindlimb dysfunction” dysfunctional hindend is the most common issue I have seen.
If you believe Osteopathy would be right for your horse. Contact me – 403.669.3666 and I’d love to learn how I might be able to help.
