Alogomyces tanneri gen. et sp. nov., a chytrid in Lobulomycetales from horse manure.
Abstract: The order Lobulomycetales contains chytrids from soil, freshwater and marine habitats; environmental DNA sampling has indicated that representatives of this order might be found in deep ocean localities. We describe Alogomyces tanneri as the first lobulomycetalean chytrid isolated from horse manure; A. tanneri is also the first species in the order to possess a rumposome in its zoospore. This species widens the range of habitats, ultrastructural variation and thallus morphology for Lobulomycetales.

This study describes the discovery of a new type of chytrid fungus, Alogomyces tanneri, in the order Lobulomycetales, extracted from horse manure. The research expands the known habitats, structural variety, and morphology of Lobulomycetales.
Discovery of a New Chytrid Species
- The researchers have described a new fungus species, Alogomyces tanneri, which belongs to the order of Lobulomycetales. This new species was isolated from horse manure.
The Order Lobulomycetales
- Lobulomycetales is an order of fungi that includes chytrids, which are found in soil, freshwater and marine habitats.
- Previous studies using environmental DNA sampling techniques have suggested that members of this order could also be present in deep ocean locations. The discovery of A. tanneri from horse manure adds a new habitat to this list.
A. Tanneri Characteristics
- A significant characteristic of A. tanneri is its possession of a rumposome in its zoospore. The rumposome is a specific type of organelle, and its presence makes A. tanneri the first species in the Lobulomycetales order to exhibit such a feature.
- This new species contributes to the known ultrastructural variation and thallus morphology (growth form and structure) of the fungi in Lobulomycetales.
Implications of the Study
- The identification of A. tanneri provides new insights into the diversity of the Lobulomycetales order.
- By expanding our knowledge of the habitats in which Lobulomycetales can be found and their structural and morphological diversity, this research could guide future investigations into this group of fungi.
