Detection of Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus in Hyalomma marginatum ticks, southern France, May 2022 and April 2023.
Abstract: Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever (CCHF), a potentially severe zoonotic viral disease causing fever and haemorrhagic manifestations in humans. As the Crimean-Congo haemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV) has been detected in ticks in Spain and antibodies against the virus in ruminant sera in Corsica, it was necessary to know more about the situation in France. In 2022-2023, CCHFV was detected in 155 ticks collected from horses and cattle in southern France.

This study reveals that the Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFV), a potentially severe and zoonotic viral disease, has been detected in 155 ticks collected from horses and cattle in southern France during 2022-2023.
Introduction
- Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) is characterised by a potentially severe zoonotic viral disease causing fever and hemorrhagic manifestations in humans.
- The disease is spread mainly through ticks, and significant studies revolve around detecting the virus in these arthropods to control the disease.
- This journal article revolves around the detection of CCHFV in ticks from horses and cattle in southern France.
Background
- In recent years, there have been increasing findings of CCHFV presence in other European countries like Spain, and the virus’s antibodies have been detected in ruminant sera in Corsica.
- This stimulated the need for an understanding of the situation in France for proactive measures and informed actions towards the virus.
Study Findings
- In this study, researchers examined ticks collected from horses and cattle in Southern France over the period of two years (2022-2023).
- In this period, the virus was detected in a total of 155 ticks, showing that the virus is present in the local tick population, thus posing a potential threat to human and livestock health.
Conclusion
- This study confirms the presence of CCHFV in southern France, expanding the geographic range of this virus within Europe.
- These results further underline the importance of continuous surveillance and control measures to curtail the spread of this potentially severe viral disease.
