[Distribution and species makeup of the horse botflies in the Buryat ASSR and Mongolian Peoples’s Republic (Oestridae, Gastrophilidae)].
Abstract: In Burjatia and Mongolia the infection of horses with rhinoestrosis and gastrophilosis accounts for 97.8-99.2% and 98.9-99.5%, respectively at the infection intensity 34 to 721 and 55 to 1473 larvae. The sheep botfly is represented by one and the horse botfly by six species; they have one generation a year. The flight of the horse botfly begins from the second decade of June and ends in the second decade of September; the flight of the sheep botfly begins in the third decade of June and ends in the first decade of September. The pupil stage lasts 20 to 61 days.

In Burjatia and Mongolia, nearly all horses are infected with rhinoestrosis and gastrophilosis, with a high number of larvae found in each horse. Both regions have several species of botflies that affect horses and sheep, with these insects being most active from June to September.
Prevalence of Infections
- In Burjatia:
- Horse infections range from 97.8% to 99.2%.
- The intensity of infection ranges from 34 to 721 larvae per horse.
- In Mongolia:
- Horse infections range from 98.9% to 99.5%.
- The intensity of infection ranges from 55 to 1473 larvae per horse.
Botfly Species
- Sheep botflies are represented by one species.
- Horse botflies are represented by six different species.
- Both types of botflies produce one generation a year.
Activity Periods
- Horse botflies:
- Start flying in the second week of June.
- End their flight in the second week of September.
- Sheep botflies:
- Begin their flight in the third week of June.
- End their flight in the first week of September.
Development Stage
- The pupil stage of the botflies lasts between 20 to 61 days.
