Equine-Assisted Intervention in a child diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder: a case report.
Abstract: An increasing number of studies have shown the beneficial effects of both recreational and therapeutic interventions assisted by animals for children with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD). The observed effects are believed to be mainly due to the ability of some animals to positively engage people, thus potentially counteracting the social withdrawal characterizing these subjects. Here we report the case of a child with high-functioning autism who has been included in an Equine-Assisted Intervention (EAI) program for 2 years. In particular, the relationship with the animal was used to encourage child’s narrative abilities as a primary means of improving cognition and communication. This case represents a first attempt to theorize the role of human-animal interaction as an adjunct to classic therapeutic strategies in ASD. During the intervention, the child appeared to gradually abandon his attitude to avoid the contact with the present and to hide in imaginative past and future. We propose animal-assisted interventions as complementary approaches capable to facilitate the verbalization of the patient’s internal states and to promote psychological well-being through the development of a bond with the animal.

The article explores the benefits of Equine-Assisted Intervention (EAI), a type of animal-assisted therapy, on a child with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). The study finds that engaging with a horse helped boost the child’s narrative abilities, a key aspect of their communication and cognitive development.
Overview of the Research
- The research focuses on the therapeutic benefits of animal-assisted interventions, specifically Equine-Assisted Intervention (EAI), for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).
- ASD is characterized by its symptoms of social-communication difficulties and restrictive or repetitive behaviors. In this context, the researchers surmise that animals can engage children with ASD in a positive and enriching way, thereby mitigating social withdrawal, a common trait among these children.
A Case Study
- This study presents a case of a child diagnosed with high-functioning autism who participated in an EAI program for 2 years.
- Rather than focusing on riding the horse, the intervention encourages the child to build a relationship with the animal, designed to stimulate the child’s narrative abilities – a vital step towards improving cognition and communication.
- Over time, the child seemed to progressively deviate from his existing attitude of avoiding contact with the present reality, opting instead to retreat into his imaginary past and future.
The Role of Human-Animal Interaction in Autism Treatment
- This research suggests the potential therapeutic benefits of human-animal interaction as an addition to traditional therapeutic strategies for ASD.
- The study proposes that animal-assisted interventions, like EAI, can be productive complementary approaches to facilitate verbalization of the patient’s internal states and enhance psychological well-being.
- The development of a bond with the animal is believed to be a significant factor promoting these improvements.
