Hematological and biochemical values of thoroughbred foals in the first six months of life.

Abstract: Hematological and biochemical parameters in five Thoroughbred foals during the first six months of life are reported. The samples were analyzed for red blood cell, packed cell volume, hemoglobin, platelet, white blood cell, absolute number for leukocytes, and erythrocyte fragility and serum calcium, inorganic phosphorus, sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, alkaline phosphatase, icterus index unit, bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen, nonprotein nitrogen, blood glucose, lacticdehydrogenase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, total protein, albumin, globulin, and A/G. The changes of these parameters are presented in relation to age after birth.

The research article discusses the study of various biochemical and blood-related parameters in newborn Thoroughbred foals over the first six months of their life.

Objective of the Research

  • The primary objective of this research was to understand the variations in hematological (related to blood) and biochemical values comprising a broad spectrum of parameters in Thoroughbred foals.
  • The study aimed to monitor and report these values over the first six months of the foals’ life to understand the changes corresponding to their age post birth.

Research Methodology

  • The study included five Thoroughbred foals as its subjects.
  • Blood samples were collected and scrutinized for various values including red blood cell count, packed cell volume, hemoglobin, platelet count, white blood cell count, the absolute number for leukocytes (white blood cells), and erythrocyte (red blood cell) fragility.
  • Moreover, the blood samples were also evaluated for serum calcium, inorganic phosphorus, sodium, potassium, chloride, magnesium, and alkaline phosphatase levels.
  • Other biochemical parameters examined included measures for icterus index unit, bilirubin, blood urea nitrogen, nonprotein nitrogen, blood glucose, lactic dehydrogenase, glutamic pyruvic transaminase, glutamic oxalacetic transaminase, total protein, albumin, globulin, and A/G (albumin to globulin ratio).

Findings of the Research

  • Overall, the study focused on documenting the changes in the listed biochemical and hematological parameters.
  • The variations in values were then correlated with the age of the foals after birth.
  • While the article abstract does not provide specific outcomes, these findings would potentially act as informative data for veterinary practitioners dealing with newborn Thoroughbred foals, aiding in their health assessment and well-being.
