[Horse, cow and reindeer were converted into arctic domestic animals].
Abstract: Domestic animal production in the arctic region is often thought to be based exclusively on reindeer herding. There are, however, regions in Northern Europe and Siberia having a long tradition in rearing breeds of cattle and horse adapted to the northers conditions also. The development of these arctic animal breeds has been largely founded on old tradition rather than on the programs of breeding organizations. As a result of the selection carried out by nature and man, the domestic animals of arctic regions express characteristics that are metabolic, structural, associated with reproductive physiology and conducive to the adaptation to arctic conditions.

The research article discusses the historical and traditional system of domestic animal farming in the Arctic area, highlighting the role of not only reindeer but also horses and cattle that have adapted to survive in these harsh northern conditions.
Introduction and Background
- The research begins by correcting a common misbelief that reindeer herding is the only form of domestic animal farming traditionally practiced in the Arctic region.
- It presents information about parts of Northern Europe and Siberia, where there is a long-established tradition of rearing certain breeds of cattle and horses that are adapted to northern conditions.
Development of Arctic Animal Breeds
- In exploring the development of these Arctic animal breeds, the article emphasizes that their evolution has not significantly relied on modern breeding programs. Instead, it’s largely reliant on ancient traditions.
Characteristics of Arctic Domestic Animals
- The study reveals the unique characteristics that Arctic domestic animals possess.
- These traits, both structural and metabolic, are inherent to their adaptation process, allowing these animals to survive in the demanding Arctic environment.
- The characteristics are also associated with the reproductive physiology of these animals, indicating a possible adjustment in their reproduction systems to ensure their survival in frigid conditions.
- These traits emerged as a result of selective processes performed by nature and humans over generations.
