[Laryngeal infection by Rhodococcus equi in patient with AIDS].
Abstract: The Rhodococcus equi is an aerobic gram positive pleomorphic bacillus, that was isolated for the first time like a producer of bronchopneumonia in young horses. Every time more often, it is being recognized as a pathogen in humans, mainly in the immunodepressed population. We described a case, until now exceptional, of laryngeal infection by Rhodococcus equi in a patient with positive serology for the virus of the human immunodeficiency (HIV), and we reviewed some clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the infections by this germ. The treatment is riphampicine and/or erythromycin, being the prognosis bad, because usually they are immunodepressed patients.

The research article discusses a rare case of laryngeal infection caused by Rhodococcus equi, an aerobic gram-positive bacteria, in a patient with AIDS, outlining some clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the infections caused by this bacteria.
Understanding Rhodococcus equi and its significance
- Rhodococcus equi is a gram-positive bacteria, initially discovered as a pathogen causing bronchopneumonia in young horses. It is described as a pleomorphic bacillus, meaning it can alter its shape and size in response to environmental conditions.
- This bacteria is increasingly being recognized as a potential threat to humans too, primarily those with weakened or suppressed immune systems such as patients with Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
Insights from the case study
- The article presents a rare case of laryngeal infection by Rhodococcus equi in a patient with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). This underlines the potential severity, especially given that such infections are usually found in immunosuppressed individuals who are more vulnerable and often have poorer prognoses.
- The researchers discuss the clinical and epidemiological characteristics of the infections triggered by Rhodococcus equi to broaden understanding of the pathogen and its potential implications in human health.
Treatment and Prognosis
- For therapeutics, rifampicin and/or erythromycin are found to be effective against Rhodococcus equi infections. However, the prognosis is less than ideal mainly due to the immunosuppressed state of the patients.
- The poor prognosis highlights the need for more attention in the prevention and treatment of such infections, especially in immunosuppressed patients like those with HIV/AIDS experiencing a higher risk.
