Metastatic cutaneous myxosarcoma in an adult horse.
Abstract: A 25-year-old mixed-breed equine with separate nodular cutaneous lesions in the right thoracic limb (RTL) and right ventral abdominal region was admitted to a Veterinary Hospital in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais. Fine-needle aspiration cytology was performed on the RTL lesion and superficial cervical lymph node, and the results were suggestive of a malignant neoplasm known as myxosarcoma. Due to the unfavorable prognosis, the animal was euthanized. Based on the macroscopic and microscopic findings, the diagnosis of metastatic cutaneous myxosarcoma was confirmed. Although rare, this tumor should be considered as a differential diagnosis for cutaneous neoplasms in this species.

The study examines a situation where a horse with nodular cutaneous lesions was diagnosed with metastatic cutaneous myxosarcoma, a rare malignant tumor.
Case Description
- The research revolves around a 25-year-old mixed breed horse, that was presented to a Veterinary Hospital in Belo Horizonte, Minas Gerais because it had separate nodular cutaneous lesions in the right thoracic limb (RTL) and right ventral abdominal region.
Diagnostic Process
- Medical professionals carried out a fine-needle aspiration cytology, a non-surgical method used to extract cells for pathological examination, on the RTL lesion and a superficial cervical lymph node.
- The results from this procedure were suggestive of a malignant neoplastic disease called myxosarcoma.
Prognosis and Outcome
- Given the serious nature of the disease, the horse’s prognosis was deemed unfavorable, leading the veterinarians to decide for euthanization of the animal.
Post-Mortem Examination
- Upon examination of the animal post-mortem, both macroscopic (observable with the naked eye) and microscopic details confirmed the diagnosis of metastatic cutaneous myxosarcoma, indicating that the tumor had spread to other parts of the body.
Significance of the Study
- The research emphasizes that while myxosarcoma is rare, it should be included as a differential diagnosis for skin tumors in horses to enhance diagnostic precision and to facilitate proper treatment decisions.
