Radiographic analysis of the dorsal hoof wall thickness in clinically normal draft horses.
Abstract: To evaluate the radiographic thickness of the dorsal hoof wall in normal draft horse feet. Methods: 33 adult draft horses with no history of laminitis, no clinically obvious lameness, and visibly unremarkable front feet were included. Methods: This was a prospective, descriptive study of clinically normal draft horses' front feet. Lateromedial radiographs were acquired of the front feet. A ratio of the dorsal hoof wall thickness to the length of the distal phalanx (DHWP3 ratio) was calculated. Results: The dorsal hoof wall thickness to length of the distal phalanx was calculated as 0.33 ± 0.03 (range of 0.28 to 0.39) in this population of draft horses. Conclusions: With very few exceptions, the heterogeneous population of draft horses evaluated in this study had a DHWP3 ratio greater than previously published values in lighter breeds (< 0.30).

This research aimed to measure the thickness of the hoof wall in draft horses using radiographic data and discovered that generally, it is thicker than those of lighter breeds.
Objective of the Research
- The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the radiographic thickness of the dorsal hoof wall in normal draft horse feet. The dorsal hoof wall is the front portion of the horse’s hoof.
Methods Used in the Research
- The research was conducted on 33 adult draft horses that showed no signs of laminitis (a severe disease of the hoof), no apparent lameness (difficulty in moving), and had visually normal front feet.
- This was a prospective, descriptive study, with the researchers observing and acquiring data without influencing the horses’ hoof health or management in any way.
- To measure the thickness of the hoof wall, lateromedial radiographs (x-ray images taken from the side of the horse’s hoof) were taken of the front feet.
- The researchers then figured out a ratio of the dorsal hoof wall thickness to the length of the distal phalanx, a bone in the horse’s foot (denoted as DHWP3 ratio). The distal phalanx length was chosen for comparison as it is a standard measure that doesn’t change substantially with the horse’s age or weight.
Findings of the Research
- The dorsal hoof wall thickness to the length of the distal phalanx in the studied draft horses was calculated as 0.33 ± 0.03, with a range from 0.28 to 0.39.
- This showed that, barring a few exceptions, the draft horses in this study had a DHWP3 ratio higher than previously published values for lighter breeds that are generally less than 0.30.
Conclusions from the Research
- From the observed data, the researchers concluded that the dorsal hoof wall of draft horses is generally thicker than that of lighter breeds.
- This research can help clinicians in having a standard reference for hoof wall thickness in draft horses and aids in early detection of lameness or other hoof-related diseases.
