A review of drug “clearance times” in racehorses.

Abstract: A review is presented of published and some unpublished work dealing with aspects of drug clearance from horses. This work includes plasma half-lives and urinary clearance times for specified drugs, as well as a consideration of more general factors likely to influence these values. The review is presented primarily as a guide to the veterinary surgeon in practice, to assist in the drug therapy of horses without contravening the Rules of Racing relating to doping.

This research paper provides a comprehensive review of how long it takes for certain drugs to be cleared from a horse’s system, taking into account a variety of factors. The study serves as a guide for veterinarians, aiming to assist in the drug therapy of racehorses without violating the anti-doping rules of racing.

Overview of Drug Clearance Times in Racehorses

  • The paper provides a vast review of existing and some unpublished studies that evaluate how long it takes for drugs to be cleared from a horse’s body.
  • The primary focus of the paper is on the plasma half-lives and urinary clearance times of specified drugs. These are important parameters to determine how long a drug will stay in a horse’s system before it is entirely cleared.

Consideration of additional influencing factors

  • The study doesn’t stop at the basic clearance times but also explores general factors likely to impact these values, such as age, metabolism, state of health, diet, exertion, and whether the horse is at rest or in a racing situation.

Veterinary Practice Guide

  • By reviewing drug clearance times and associated influencing factors, the paper fills a significant gap in knowledge and provides a valuable guide for veterinary surgeons.
  • The information can assist veterinarians in effectively managing drug therapy for racehorses – aiding in the choice, dosage, and timing of medications – without contravening anti-doping rules.
  • The anti-doping rules for the sport are incredibly stringent and hold severe consequences for any transgressions. Hence, having a resource that delineates typical drug clearance times in horses can be invaluable for veterinarians treating racehorses to ensure compliance with these rules.
