Field studies with piperazine-carbon disulfide complex against parasites of the horse.
Abstract: In field studies in which 197 sucklings, weanlings and yearlings and mares were treated with Parvex at the dosage rate of 37-5 mg. per Ib. body-weight, both immature and mature ascarids were effectively removed; but this dosage level did not have any apparent action against Strongylus vulgaris or Strongyloides westeri. Low level phenothiazine medication was effective in depressing egg production and inhibiting larval development of strongyles, especially S. vulgaris.

This research explores the effectiveness of the Parvex, a medication containing piperazine and carbon disulfide complex, in treating parasites in horses, particularly in young and immature horses. The article provides data on the efficiency of the medicine against ascarids but also highlights its inefficiency against certain other types of parasites such as Strongylus vulgaris and Strongyloides westeri.
Research Context
- This study focuses on the application of a specific drug, Parvex, which is a compound of piperazine and carbon disulfide intended for treating horse parasites. As part of veterinary medicine and animal care, researchers are constantly examining various treatments to tackle infestations and diseases in animals, in this case, horses.
- The subjects of this experiment were horses of different ages, specifically 197 sucklings, weanlings, yearlings and mature mares.
Research Details
- The researchers focused on testing the effectiveness of Parvex at a dosage rate of 37.5 mg per pound of body weight. They specifically examined how well the medication removed immature and mature ascarids, a type of parasitic roundworm.
- The findings indicated that Parvex successfully eliminated these ascarids, demonstrating the beneficial impact of this drug-derivative.
Investigations on Other Parasites
- In contrast to the successful removal of ascarids, Parvex was not effective against two other parasites: Strongylus vulgaris and Strongyloides westeri. Strongylus vulgaris is a type of bloodworm usually found in horses’ large intestine, while Strongyloides westeri is a type of threadworm affecting young horses.
- However, researchers discovered that low-level phenothiazine medication successfully reduced egg production and inhibited the developmental cycle of strongyles, particularly S. vulgaris. Phenothiazine is an anthelmintic drug used to treat parasitic infestations, implicating its potential use in managing these types of parasites in horses.
Implications of the Study
- The mixed results reinforce the idea that treatment efficacy can vary widely between different types of parasites, suggesting the need for more tailored treatments for specific parasitic infestations.
- This study is essential for contributing to a greater understanding of equine parasite management strategies, highlighting the need for further research in areas where existing treatments fall short.
