Hepatic biliary adenofibroma: a hitherto unrecognized tumor in equines. Report of a case.
Abstract: Hepatic biliary cystadenoma is a well-delineated neoplasm in some domestic animals, especially in cats, but it has not been reported in equines. We report on a case of hepatic biliary tumor, incidentally found in a 10-year-old horse, with gross and microscopic features similar to those observed in biliary adenofibroma of humans. The tumor presented as a solid mass measuring 16 cm in diameter and histologically was composed of complex tubulocystic biliary components embedded in an abundant fibrotic stroma. We regarded this tumor as a morphological variant of biliary cystadenoma of domestic animals. Differential diagnoses from other hepatic biliary tumor-like and tumor lesions are provided.

Summary
This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.
The study reports a previously unrecognized hepatic biliary tumor in a 10-year-old horse. This tumor shows similarities to biliary adenofibroma in humans and is considered a variant of biliary cystadenoma typically found in domestic animals.
Background of the Study
- The research presents a new case of hepatic biliary tumor found in equines (horses).
- While hepatic biliary cystadenoma is a recognized tumor in some domestic animals, such as cats, there is no previous mention of it occurring in equines.
- The study implies that this is a major discovery in veterinary medicine, offering new insights into animal health and disease.
Observation and Analysis of the Tumor
- The tumor was incidentally found in a 10-year-old horse.
- It presents as a solid mass measuring 16 cm in diameter.
- Microscopic evaluation revealed that the tumor was composed of complex tubulocystic biliary components. These components were embedded in an abundant fibrotic stroma, which is a connective tissue found in the body.
- The researchers found that the tumor’s gross and microscopic features were similar to those seen in biliary adenofibroma in humans.
Classification of the Tumor
- The researchers regarded this tumor as a morphological variant of biliary cystadenoma, a type of tumor common in domestic animals.
- This classification was based on the observed similarities between the equine tumor and previously-studied biliary cystadenomas.
Differential Diagnosis
- The authors provide differential diagnoses, suggesting other potential conditions that could manifest similar symptoms or characteristics. This ensures that similar future cases are identified and treated correctly.
Conclusion and Further Study
- The discovery of this tumor variant in horses is a significant step in understanding equine pathology, contributing to the field of veterinary medicine.
- This could spur further research into whether other typically non-equine diseases could also occur within the species.
