Musculoskeletal examination of the forelimb of the horse.

Abstract: The intention of this tutorial video is to illustrate the methods of examining the forelimb and neck of a horse in order to identify abnormalities that may be associated with lameness or disease. Methods: A 16-year-old quarter horse gelding was used for examination. Methods: The horse was examined for abnormalities by means of physical examination. Results: The examination of the forelimb and neck of the horse was successfully completed. Conclusions: This examination technique is required to identify abnormalities in the equine forelimb and can be utilized during a lameness examination.

The study is a tutorial video illustrating the methods of examining a horse’s forelimb and neck to identify any abnormalities that might be linked to lameness or disease.

Objective of Research

  • The main aim of the research was to demonstrate ways to effectively examine the forelimb and neck of a horse. This is necessary in order to detect any abnormal signs which could be symptoms of a disease or lead to lameness.

Methodology

  • The research used a 16-year-old quarter horse gelding for the examination. This breed was chosen as it represents a standard, widely available type of horse and it is a prime representative of the horse population.
  • The examination was carried out manually via a physical examination. The emphasis on a hands-on approach is because it offers direct feedback about any abnormalities present in the horse’s forelimb and neck.

Results

  • The physical examination of the horse’s neck and forelimb was successful, meaning the researchers were able to perform a thorough check-up of the horse and look for any signs of diseases or conditions that may cause lameness.

Conclusion

  • The results of the research emphasize the importance and efficiency of this technique. The hands-on physical examination method proved to be useful in recognizing potential problems in the equine forelimb and neck.
  • This method can be consistently employed during lameness examinations. The researchers recommend its use as it can help in early detection and intervention of diseases or conditions leading to lameness.
