Paroxysmal atrial fibrillation and clinically reversible cor pulmonale in a horse with complicated recurrent airway obstruction.
Abstract: Cor pulmonale is considered an uncommon complication in horses with recurrent airway obstruction (RAO). This case report describes the history, clinical and further examination findings, treatment, progression and outcome of a horse diagnosed with cor pulmonale and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation of 2 days duration due to a severe exacerbation of RAO. To our best knowledge, this is the first report of RAO induced pulmonary hypertension in a horse causing atrial fibrillation. However, even severe cardiac changes due to respiratory dysfunction seem to be largely reversible in horses.

The study explores a unique case of a horse diagnosed with cor pulmonale and atrial fibrillation caused by a severe form of recurrent airway obstruction (RAO). The researchers report that serious cardiac changes due to respiratory dysfunction in horses appear to be largely reversible.
Background of the Study
- The research focuses on the case of a horse suffering from recurrent airway obstruction (RAO), a common condition in horses similar to asthma in humans. The condition could lead to a severe form of RAO, resulting in cor pulmonale, a condition where the heart’s right ventricle is enlarged or fails due to lung disease or high blood pressure in the lungs.
- In this particular case, the RAO onset was so severe that it not only led to cor pulmonale but resulted in the horse also developing paroxysmal atrial fibrillation, an episode of irregular heart rhythm.
Findings of the Study
- Through an in-depth investigation of the horse’s medical history, along with clinical examinations and treatment, the researchers discovered unusual implications of severe RAO. It’s considered the first reported case of RAO induced pulmonary hypertension causing atrial fibrillation in a horse.
- The study reveals that even when the RAO leads to such severe complications, the cardiac changes can be reversed in horses. This suggests optimism for successful treatment and recovery for horses experiencing similar complications due to RAO.
Implications of the Study
- The findings of the study can be of immense value to veterinary medicine, as it provides new understandings about the complications of severe RAO in horses.
- This research also sheds light on the potential for reversibility of serious cardiac changes caused by respiratory dysfunction in horses, offering hope and important information for the treatment of such cases in the future.
