Sarcocystis neurona-associated ataxia in horses in Brazil.
Abstract: Sarcocystis neurona-like schizonts were found in sections of brain and spinal cord of two ataxic horses from Brazil. The diagnosis was supported by staining with anti-Sarcocystis serum in an immunohistochemical test. One of the affected horses was born in Argentina and raised in Brazil, and the other horse was born and raised in Brazil.

The research investigates the occurrence of Sarcocystis neurona-associated ataxia in horses in Brazil, identifying Sarcocystis neurona-like schizonts in the brain and spinal cord sections of affected horses.
Study Summary
- The research focuses on the observation of a neurological disorder in horses in Brazil related to the infection of a particular parasite, Sarcocystis neurona.
- The disorder studied is ataxia, a condition characterized by a lack of muscle control during voluntary movements, often leading to a lack of balance and coordination in the affected horses.
Methodology
- The researchers examined sections of the brain and spinal cord from two ataxic horses from Brazil— one raised in Brazil after being born in Argentina and the other born and raised in Brazil.
- These sections were studied for the presence of Sarcocystis neurona-like schizonts, a stage of the parasite that infests the tissues of its host.
Results
- Sarcocystis neurona-like schizonts were detected in the sampled sections, confirming the presence of this parasite in the affected horses.
- The researchers further supported their diagnosis using staining techniques with anti-Sarcocystis serum in an immunohistochemical test. This test visually detects the presence of specific proteins produced by the parasite, helping establish its presence conclusively.
Implications
- This research paper aids in understanding the potential role of Sarcocystis neurona as a causative agent in ataxia in horses in Brazil. It paves the way for further investigations to explore the incidence, impacts, management, and control of this parasite in equine populations in Brazil and potentially across the globe.
- The identified presence of Sarcocystis neurona in horses raises concerns about the health and welfare of equine populations in regions where the parasite may be prevalent. It highlights the necessity for preventive measures and treatments to control such parasitic invasions.
