Unilateral subcutaneous fibroma in the distal femoral region of a 5-year-old Nooitgedacht mare.

Abstract: A non-ossified unilateral subcutaneous fibroma was diagnosed in the distal femoral region of a 5-year-old Nooitgedacht mare. Histopathological examination of the excised mass revealed long interweaving bundles of semi-mature monotonous collagenous connective tissue with fusiform nuclei without mitotic figures. The mare made an uneventful recovery following surgical removal of the neoplasm. Subcutaneous fibromas should be considered in the differential diagnosis of skin swellings associated with the limbs of horses.

The research article is about a case of a fibroma (non-ossified unilateral subcutaneous fibroma) being identified and successfully removed from the leg (specifically in the distal femoral region) of a 5-year-old Nooitgedacht mare.

Objective

The objective of the study was to diagnose and treat a rare case of subcutaneous fibroma in the distal femoral region of a Nooitgedacht mare (a breed of horse). The researchers aimed to provide essential insights on fibromas to be considered in the differential diagnosis of skin swellings associated with the limbs of horses.

Diagnosis

  • The diagnosis was made based on a histopathological examination of the excised mass.
  • The examination revealed long interweaving bundles of semi-mature monotonous collagenous connective tissue.
  • The tissue contained fusiform nuclei, but there were no mitotic figures detected.

Treatment

  • The mare was successfully treated by surgically removing the neoplasm, or the fibroma.
  • The recovery following the surgery was described as uneventful, indicating the procedure was done successfully and there were no complications.

Significance

  • The study brought to light the importance of considering subcutaneous fibromas in the differential diagnosis of skin swellings that affect the limbs of horses.
  • By documenting the case, the researchers aim to provide valuable reference to other veterinarians who may come across similar cases in their practice.
