Cristin McCarty-Van Straaten, DVM

Cristin was born and raised in Saskatchewan in a farming family. Her parents ran a cash crop farm with much of her extended family running other food animal producing farms throughout SK and Alberta. By the age of 6, Cristin had her first horse and has continued to ride and train horses ever since. Cristin attended the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, MI on a rowing scholarship where she graduated with a Bachelor of Science and a Masters of Public Health. She returned to Canada in 2006, where she rowed as a member of the Canadian National Women’s rowing team for 4 years representing Canada in multiple international events, including the 2007 Pan American Games. In 2011, Cristin moved to Guelph, ON where she completed a PhD at the Ontario Veterinary College (OVC) on equine lameness and joint disease in racehorses. In 2016, she began studying to become at veterinarian at OVC. She became increasingly interested in the dairy industry after meeting her husband who was born and raised on a dairy farm in Perth county. Her areas of interest include equine lameness, equine SMT (chiropractic), and bovine emergency medicine. Cristin currently lives in Guelph with her husband, Steven and their two sons, Arthur and Andrew. They have a cash-crop farm out near Mitchell, ON that they run together. In her spare time, Cristin enjoys being active with her family, doing field work and gardening. (Source)
