F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Rescue & Sanctuary

F.R.I.E.N.D.S. is a non profit 501 (c)3 organization that was established in 1987. Prior to that, in 1972 we began accepting EIA positive horses and working with various researchers, colleges and various scientists and we still work with them today. The inapparent carrier is not sick, they simply carry the antibody for EIA.
F.R.I.E.N.D.S. mission and vision are to provide a permanent safe haven for all horses that are asymptomatic carriers of Equine Infectious Anemia within the state of Florida as well as for any horse in immediate need of assistance in Broward County thus preventing their needless destruction. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. provides sanctuary to all horses we accept. F.R.I.E.N.D.S. does not buy, sell, trade, or give away horses. Instead, we offer them a lifetime of sanctuary so these animals will never need help again. Our priority is to prevent the needless destruction of horses. Our primary financial goal is to acquire sustainable funding to provide these noble animals with the dignity of allowing them to live out their lives while meeting both their physical and psychological needs. We provide them with the best possible care and the loving interactions they so deserve. Our moral position is to advocate and participate in ongoing research to find a cure, vaccine, or aide in creating a more accurate test for EIA or a vaccine. We offer aid by providing researchers with test tubes of blood samples, drawn by a licensed veterinarian for their work. It is also our intention to factually educate the public regarding EIA thus allowing us to dispel the myths and misconceptions that lead owners to think their only option is euthanasia. It is our ethical obligation to surrounding communities that we continue to give back to them in a worthwhile and enriching way by maintaining and enhancing our many programs that benefit local families, organizations, and horse owners, thereby positively impacting the entire community.

Area of Expertise: OUR CORE GOALS 1. To create a permanent safe haven for all horses that are asymptomatic carriers of Equine Infectious Anemia within the State of Florida thus preventing the needless slaughter and destruction of these noble animals. 2. To accept any horse or farm animal in immediate need of assistance throughout Broward County, Florida even if they do not have EIA. 3. To continue to provide our established programs and to develop additional positive interactive programs beneficial to individuals and organizations within the local community. 4. To promote local, state, national and worldwide awareness of our presence while disseminating factual educational materials utilizing all forms of media in order to dispel myths and misconceptions regarding Equine Infectious Anemia. 5. To acquire sufficient funding to provide the horses with their immediate needs including feed, grain, supplements, veterinary care as well as human and herd interaction for the duration of their lives. 6. To continue to work with the Department of Agriculture as well as providing researchers the opportunity to study our herd as they attempt to find a cure, vaccine, treatment or a more accurate testing for the condition. 7. To continue to accept animals in need of immediate placement from all Local Law Enforcement Offices in Broward County to ensure the abandonment or abuse of animals does not become an expense for them or the court system. We do this as a free service.
