Dr. Jack Root, Jr., has earned his status as a highly-regarded horseman and accomplished equine veterinarian. Jack’s lifelong passion for the science and practice of horse health and care developed from over nearly four decades of hands on work as an equine veterinarian and his continued studies. Jack has attended advanced studies in areas of reproduction, lameness, sports medicine and dentistry. He is well known for his insight and judgment in diagnosis of difficult cases for horses of all breeds. To many horse owners, breeders, and trainers Jack is an invaluable resource and is referred to for pre-purchase opinions and exams. Jack owned his first horse at age six. By age nine Jack was firmly committed to his career path to become a professional as an equine veterinarian. Even throughout his childhood and youth Jack became well-known as an expert horseman. Jack also began his lifelong passion for Thoroughbred race horses before leaving elementary school. Jack owned his first Thoroughbred broodmare while in undergraduate school. He graduated from Oregon State University in 1974 with two degrees – a B.S. in Biology and a B.S. in General Science. That same year he began his studies at Iowa State University where he graduated with his Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine in 1978. While pursuing his degree Jack interned with some of the most highly-regarded equine veterinarians in the country, including the Hagyards practice in Lexington, KY, and Dr. Tiegland in Florida. Jack is a lifelong learner currently pursuing certification in International Society of Equine Locomotor Pathology (ISELP). Jack is a past President of the Oregon Thoroughbred Breeders Association and has also trained race horses at Longacres, Portland Meadows, Yakima, Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Park. Jack owns and breeds race horses several of which have been sent to and trained by D. Wayne Lukas. Jack is such an avid fan of racing, and the Kentucky Derby in particular, that two Kentucky Derby winners, Grindstone, trained by D. Wayne Lukas, and Giacomo, owned by Adena Springs, stand stud at Oakhurst. If you can locate Jack when he is not performing veterinary work, you may find him introducing farm visitors to both Kentucky Derby winners, at a race track, tending to his farm animals, attending veterinary conferences, or putting up hay. He is extremely proud of his Oakhurst team members and staff and their excellence of always striving to do better for our clients and their horses. (Source)
