Dr. James Hogg was born and raised in the Rogue Valley on a small sheep ranch just outside of Grants Pass, Oregon. Throughout his youth, he developed an interest in the veterinary profession and grew fond of the idea of working alongside his father, Dr. Nicholas Hogg, a graduate of Iowa State University and founder of Oregon Veterinary Services in Merlin. Dr. James Hogg is known locally for his high school athletics, such as football and track and field, as well as being an accomplished lower Rogue River guide.
After graduating from North Valley High School in 2009, Dr. Hogg attended the University of Nevada, Reno to complete his undergraduate degree in Animal Science. While at UNR he became a charter member of the organization M.E.N. of Distinction. This organization is acknowledged on campus for being heavily involved in community service and actively engaging in local high school youth mentorship programs. In addition, Dr. Hogg joined the fraternity, Kappa Alpha Psi which extended his involvement in community service, and became an influential member of student life on campus. At the end of his senior year, Dr. Hogg was accepted into Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine.
Dr. Hogg spent his first three years of veterinary school in the Caribbean, just southeast of Puerto Rico, on an island, St. Kitts and Nevis, at Ross University. These three years were filled with a rigorous, year-round study curriculum, not to mention the several dozen scuba diving trips. Graduates of Ross University are required to complete a final year of clinical study in the states, mostly due to the limits of clinical experience available on an island in the middle of the Caribbean. A graduate of Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine is thought highly of at the veterinary schools in the US and is easily identified not only by their veterinary knowledge base but also by their floral shirts and the umbrella in their cocktails. Dr. Hogg spent his final year of veterinary school at Oklahoma State University. It was during this time in Stillwater, Oklahoma that Dr. Hogg acquired a profound love for equine medicine and ultimately understood that this was his niche to fill back at Oregon Veterinary Services.
Following his accomplishments and earning a degree of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Dr. Hogg had one last stop in Reno, Nevada prior to his return home. Dr. Hogg spent an additional three years interning with one of the nation’s most knowledgeable veterinary equine practitioners specializing in dentistry, Dr. Scott K. Greene of Equine Veterinary Care of Nevada. Not only did this 3-year relationship develop into a lasting friendship, it equipped Dr. Hogg with all the knowledge, skills, and instrumentation for complete advanced equine dentistry.
At last, in 2018, Dr. Hogg returned to beautiful Southern Oregon to practice medicine alongside his father where he plans to spend the rest of his days continuing his father’s legacy and providing the exceptional service his father built in the Merlin community. (Source)
