Dr. Jamie Higgins was raised in Chester, Ca. She knew from an early age that she would grow up to be a veterinarian. Dr. Higgins attended UC Davis where she majored in Neurology, Physiology, and Behavior. Dr. Higgins graduated at the top of her veterinary class at UC Davis in 2004. She then completed a one year internship at Arizona Equine Medical and Surgical Centre, in Gilbert, Arizona. Dr. Higgins returned to UC Davis for a 3 year residency in Large Animal Internal Medicine. Following her residency and board certification as a specialist in Large Animal Internal Medicine by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Dr. Higgins completed a second 2 year residency/fellowship in Equine Emergency and Critical Care. She is a board certified doctor in this specialty by the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care as well, and is one of only a handful of veterinarians in the country with this combination of advanced training. Dr. Higgins worked as a faculty clinician in the UC Davis Equine Internal Medicine/Critical Care Service for an additional two years. She has also been a consulting specialist and relief hospital veterinarian at Loomis Basin Equine Hospital in Northern California. Dr. Higgins, her husband, Dr. Marcus Skacel, and three daughters have settled comfortably in the Treasure Valley. Dr. Skacel is a partner in the Herd Health bovine practice centered out of Caldwell, Idaho. Dr. Higgins joined the Idaho Equine team in 2013. Her focus at Idaho Equine Hospital is neonatal care, critical care cases, diagnostic ultrasound, neurologic disease, respiratory disease, infectious disease, and chronic medical conditions. Dr. Higgins is a member of ACVIM, ACVECC, and AAEP.
