A fascination with equine athletes and sports medicine drew Dr. Jos M. Garc a-L pez to join the faculty of the Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine at Tufts University and its Hospital for Large Animals (HLA) in 2002. He is double certified, achieving Diplomate status in 2001 from the American College of Veterinary Surgeons (ACVS) and in 2013 from the American College of Veterinary Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation (ACVSMR).
Dr. Garc a-L pez is the current Head of the newly formed Equine Sports Medicine & Surgery Service within the HLA, where he specializes in lameness, advanced imaging (nuclear Medicine, CT and MRI), regenerative therapies (Stem Cell, PRP, IRAP), as well as orthopedic and respiratory surgery for his equine patients. Dr. Garc a-L pez also serves as a director for the Skeletal Pathobiology course as well as a contributor the Large Animal Medicine & Surgery course, lecturing on Equine Musculoskeletal conditions.
In addition to his clinical interests, his area of research expertise include the development and testing of new instrumentation and techniques which aid in the management and treatment of fractures and joint injury. Dr. Garc a-L pez presents regularly at National and International equine conferences. He has also written numerous publications, including peer-reviewed journal articles and text book chapters and book chapters in the area of surgery and equine sports medicine. He and his wife, fellow Hospital for Large Animals faculty member Dr. Kate Chope, live in nearby Westborough, MA, with their three children, three English Pointers, a cat, and two ponies. (Source)
