Keith B. Berkeley, DVM

Dr. Berkeley grew up in Columbia, South Carolina, the son of a college professor and registered nurse. After spending many summers helping his uncle, Dr. Ernest Benner, with his veterinary practice, he decided being a veterinarian is what he wanted to do. Dr. Berkeley attended Clemson University and earned his DVM in 1984 from Tuskegee University in Alabama. He returned to his uncle’s practice after graduation and has never left. He worked his way up from an internship, to an associate, to a partner, to his present role as the practice owner.

Dr. Berkeley enjoys all aspects of practice because there is a great deal of day to day variety in what he sees and does. He is particularly interested in equine lameness and reproduction work along with managing the practice. He is licensed to practice in West Virginia, Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania. Dr. Berkeley is a member of the American Association of Equine Practitioners, American Association of Bovine Practitioners, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the West Virginia Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Berkeley is very involved in the community. He is a Rotary member and sits on the boards of Bank of Charles Town, WV University Hospital and Asbury Methodist Church. Dr. Berkeley lives on a farm outside of town with his wife, Laura, who is an elementary school teacher for hearing impaired children. Son, Preston, is pursuing an electrical engineering degree at Clemson University and daughter, Nell, is majoring in secondary education at WV Wesleyan College. Since Preston and Nell are away at school, Dr. Berkeley and his wife have plenty to do taking care of their animals, which include an Australian shepherd named Sassy and two house cats named Smokey and Stripe. Along with their house pets, Berkeley’s care for just a few more farm animals – five horses, three lambs and about 25 Texas Longhorn cows. (Source)
