Dr. Weaver’s love of animals began during his boyhood on the family dairy farm in Northern Indiana. But it was his 12 years of living in Kenya, East Africa, that brought him his most intense association with animal life. He spent his junior year abroad at the University of Nairobi as a student from Goshen College, Goshen, Indiana. This piqued his interest in Kenya where he returned after graduation to teach school for a few years. He also was a guide for photographic safaris which allowed him to see the complex symbiotic relationship between animals and humans. While managing a 140,000-acre cattle ranch in Kenya, he was able to expand his husbandry skills in a setting devoid of veterinary practitioners. The ability to diagnose, treat, and prevent disease and illness in such a remote setting was challenging and crucial, often being the difference between profit and loss, pain and soundness in his herds.
It was this experience that led him to return to veterinary school in 1976. In 1986, after returning from Kenya, he began to see the inadequacy of using traditional medicine exclusively. The racehorses he was treating and livestock stressed by the extreme environmental conditions of East Africa were not recovering to a level of soundness even when cured of their apparent ills. Dr. Weaver decided to learn more about the prevention of disease and systemic wellness by studying acupuncture. The inclusion of chiropractic to expand the animal’s path to healing supplemented with herbal medicine helped to create a medical package that healed, prevented disease, and strengthened the body into a sound and happy whole.
Dr. Weaver’s education in integrative medicine includes studies at the International Veterinary Acupuncture Society (IVAS), the Chi Institute for acupuncture, and the American Veterinary Chiropractic Association (AVCA). In addition, he has completed a 200-hour course in Advanced Chiropractic Neurology at the Healing Oasis Wellness Center in Wisconsin. For the past 35 years, he has maintained his membership in the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Association of Equine Practitioners (AAEP). (Source)
