Utilization of polarized microscopy to differentiate deep penetrating nevus from equine type melanomas. Equine type melanoma can mimic deep penetrating nevus (DPN), making histologic diagnosis challenging. We sought to investigate if the pattern of collagen polarization could be helpful in this setting. A total of 52 specimens were reviewed with polarized microscopy to determine whether refractile collagen was present within melanocytic nests vs. surrounding but not within the nests. Equestrian chilblain: another outdoor recreational hazard. Herein, we describe two cases and review 14 cases of equestrian chilblain or 'equestrian cold panniculitis' in the literature. The first, a 23-year-old healthy female horse trainer, presented with burning nodular swelling on her lateral thighs. The second was a 34-year-old healthy woman with recurrent nodular eruption on the lateral thighs after horseback riding in the winter. Condylomata acuminata. A 5-year-old Thoroughbred chestnut mare was presented because of multiple lesions noticed for approximately one year over the vulva and ther perianal areas. Clinically, there were moist warts that stood out because of their whitish color which contrasted strikingly with the surrounding, normally pigmented, uninvolved skin (Fig. 1).
