Identification of the piroplasms isolated from horses with clinical piroplasmosis in Poland. The study was aimed at determining the cause of the diseases in three horses exhibiting symptoms of fever, ataxia, mucus membrane paleness, haematuria and thrombocytopenia. The PCR technique revealed the presence in the blood of 18S RNA Babesia/Theileria spp. genetic material. DNA amplification using primers RLB F2 and RLB R2 produced 430 bp size products. The sequences of these PCR products demonstrated a 95.6-97.5% similarity with the sequence of the fragment of 18S RNA Babesia equi, gene number DQ287951 in the GenBank. The treatment utilizing the subcutaneous application of the imidocarb re...
[The case of the nematode Setaria equina found in the vaginal sac of the stallion’s scrotum]. The nematode Setaria equina usually reside in body cavities and do not cause clinical symptoms. From time to time, however, these parasites can be located in the scrotum and spermatic cord inflicting pain and edema in these body parts. The aim of the study was to describe the case of the nematode Setaria equina found in the vaginal sac of the stallion's scrotum. During the study, thorough examination of 50 isolated testicles of 25 stallions was conducted. The horses were obtained post-slaughter from the local slaughterhouse near Krakow. In one of examined stallions, two females of Setaria equi...
[The communities of cyathostomes (Cyathostominae) in year-old and two-year-old Pure Blood Arabian mares]. The objective of this study was to evaluate the strongyles species in 34 Pure Blood Arabian Horses: one-year-old mares (n = 12) and two-year old mares (n = 22) from the horse stud in 2005, kept under housed-pastured system and dewormed systematically, twice a year using the ivermectin compounds. Methods: The practical method of in vivo determination of strongyles species in horses is collection of these nematodes from the feaces after treatment. Nematodes were collected 24 hours after deworming from 1000 g sample of feaces, then were classified to appropriate species and relative abundance of ...
Occurrence of roundworm (Parascaris equorum) in horses from small farms based on necropsy. The objective of this study was to evaluate the level of roundworm infection in working horses slaughtered for meat. In these horses anthelmintics had not been used. Methods: Roundworms were collected post-mortem from small intestines of 83 horses. Results: The mean prevalence of roundworm infection was 12% and intensity--46.7 specimens per horse. Infection was found only in foals; 10 animals were infected (45.4%) among the 22 examined. Due to common occurrence of roundworms (Parascaris equorum) in foals this nematode control should focus particularly on regular anthelmintic treatment of young...
The gastro-intestinal parasites community of the Przewalski’s horse, Equus przewalskii Poljakov, 1881, and the domestic horse in the Chernobyl exclusion zone. A diagnostic deworming of 21 Przewalski horses, free-living in the Chernobyl exclusion zone Ukraine, and of six stabled domestic horses, has been conducted eighteen years after the Chernobyl nuclear disaster. This survey yielded 31 species (of 5 families and 3 classes, 28 species of nematodes, 1 species of cestodes, and 2 larvae of botflies). A total 29 and 19 helmith species has been recorded in the Przewalski horse and domestic horse respectively. Only six helmith species were common for the two horse species. Species from the family Strongylidae constituted the dominant helmith group. Four ...
Occurrence of Strongylidae (Nematoda: Strongyloidea) in Polish horses “tarpans” from Popielne Reserve. The study was performed to evaluate intensity of strongylid infection in stabled tarpans using the method of collecting worms after anthelmintic treatment and in wild tarpans from Popielne reserve on the basis of faecal examination. After treatment with ivermectin 12 cyathostomes and one large strongyle species were recovered from the faeces of two tarpans. The most abundant cyathostome species were C. catinatum, C. pateratum, C. longibursatum, C. nassatum and C. coronatus. A higher intensity of infections with small strongyles (cyathostomes) was found in stabled group than in the group from t...
[The influence of diptera on the domestic animals]. The Diptera attacked domestic animals in Poland are: Simuliidae, Culicidae, Tabanidae, Gasterophilidae, Hypoder-matidae and Muscidae. The insect assail the crazing animals, mostly during sunny day dna at close of day. Lack of effective repelents and also difficulties with their usage, makes it impossible to complete extermination of parasitic insects in the environment. It is posible to effectively fight against Hypoderma bovis and Gasterophilus spp.
[Influence of animal breeding manner on the occurence of internal parasites]. On the turn of July and August the prevalence and intensity of internal parasites of cattle, deer, and primitive Polish horses were estimated. It was determined, that all groups of animals were infected with parasites. The prevalence and intensity of infection were diversified and depended on the animal species, breed, age, and even sex. For instance, dairy cows of lowland black-and-white breed were six times stronger infected than Polish red breed, despite using the same pasture and the same cowshed. Nematodes and coccidia were present in calves using small, frequently wet, calf-runs and at h...
[Intestinal parasites infection of horses from riding clubs in Kraków area]. The studies were carried out in 2001 and 2002 on horses from riding clubs in Krakow area. On the basis of McMaster method EPG (eggs per gram) and prevalence of infection (%) was evaluated. The most common parasites were strongyles (Strongylidae). In the first year of study in dynamics of strongyles eggs output of horses kept on paddocks two peaks were observed: in May (450 EPG) and January (427 EPG), in comparison with horses under pasture system where the highest level of strongyles eggs output were in May (832 EPG), from August (420 EPG) to October (385 EPG) and in March (482 EPG). In the se...
[Occurrence of Parascaris equorum in foals and adult horses under different breeding conditions]. Autopsies and analyses of faecal samples from working horses have shown common occurrence of ascarids in foals, whereas 19.6% of adult horses have been found infected. No influence of season on EPG in adult horses has been found. Study based on faecal samples from stud horses has shown that 5-6-month old animals were most susceptible to the infection. 50% of foals have been found infected in spite of deworming with the use of bezimidazole compounds. It has been stated that the proper dose of an anthelminthic is a basic problem in the control of ascarids.
