Topic:Schirmer Tear Test
The Schirmer Tear Test (STT) is a diagnostic procedure used to measure tear production in horses. It is primarily employed to assess the lacrimal gland function and diagnose conditions related to tear production deficiencies, such as keratoconjunctivitis sicca (dry eye). The test involves placing a standardized strip of filter paper inside the lower eyelid for a specific duration, typically one minute, to quantify tear production by measuring the length of the wetted area. The results provide valuable information about the ocular surface health and lacrimal function in equine patients. This page aggregates peer-reviewed research studies and scholarly articles that explore the methodology, application, and clinical implications of the Schirmer Tear Test in equine ophthalmology.
Comparison of the Effects of 0.1% Fluorometholone and 1% Prednisolone on Intraocular Pressure and Schirmer Tear Test in Equine Eye. This research was performed to compare the effects of prednisolone and fluorometholone on intraocular pressure (IOP) and Schirmer tear test (STT) in the normal equine eye. Sixteen normal mares aged between 6 and 10 years were used for this study. Horses were randomly assigned to two groups. Eight horses in the first group received 0.2 mL of topical 1% prednisolone in one eye and the contralateral eye was used as control (0.2 mL of saline was instilled). The second group received 0.2 mL of 0.1% fluorometholone in a randomly selected eye and the contralateral eye served as control and received 0...
Effects of trimethoprim-sulfadiazine on tear production and the fluctuations of Schirmer tear test values in horses. The objectives of this study were to observe the effects of trimethoprim-sulfadiazine on equine tear production and to determine normal fluctuations in Schirmer tear test (STT) values in horses. A randomized, placebo-controlled, blinded clinical trial measuring STT values in 15 horses over an 8-week period was performed. The treatment group (eight horses) received 30 mg/kg trimethoprim-sulfadiazine orally once a day and the control group (seven horses) received placebo (flour) at the same time. All horses were housed outdoors throughout the study. Schirmer tear test values were measured at 0, ...
