A comparison of N-butylscopolammonium and lidocaine for control of rectal pressure in horses.
Abstract: In its FDA approved formulation, N-butylscopolammonium bromide (Buscopan Injectable Solution, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica) is an anticholinergic spasmolytic agent indicated for management of abdominal pain associated with spasmodic colic, flatulent colic, and simple impactions in horses. Use of this drug ablates gastrointestinal peristalsis and rectal pressure. It ahs been suggested that N-butylscopolammonium bromide could be used to facilitate rectal examinations in horses. This study compared the effects of N-butylscopolammonium bromide versus lidocaine and a saline control on rectal pressure and the number of rectal strains during rectal examination. The results of this study indicate that this drug increases the quality and, presumably, the safety of rectal examinations in horses.

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.
The research article focuses on a study comparing N-butylscopolammonium bromide and lidocaine in controlling rectal pressure in horses during rectal examinations.
Research Purpose
- The main objective of the study was to explore the effectiveness of N-butylscopolammonium bromide (also referred to as Buscopan Injectable Solution) compared to lidocaine and a saline control in managing rectal pressure during equine rectal examinations.
- The researchers were motivated by the potential benefits of N-butylscopolammonium bromide for improving the quality and safety of these procedures.
N-butylscopolammonium Bromide and Lidocaine
- N-butylscopolammonium bromide is an FDA-approved anticholinergic agent used to manage abdominal pain in horses. Its applications include treating conditions like spasmodic colic, flatulent colic, and simple impactions.
- This drug has been shown to halt gastrointestinal peristalsis and lower rectal pressure, suggesting its potential for facilitating rectal examinations in horses.
- On the other hand, lidocaine is a local anesthetic frequently used during medical procedures to reduce pain and discomfort.
Study Design and Outcomes
- The study compared the effects of N-butylscopolammonium bromide, lidocaine, and a saline solution on rectal pressure and the numbers of rectal strains observed during rectal examinations.
- These metrics were analysed to determine the effectiveness of each substance in managing rectal pressure to facilitate safe and effective rectal examinations.
- Based on the study’s results, N-butylscopolammonium bromide demonstrated a considerable potential for increasing the quality, and presumably safety, of equine rectal examinations.
Implications of the Research
- The improved rectal pressure control provided by N-butylscopolammonium bromide suggests its potential as an effective alternative to lidocaine for facilitating rectal examinations in horses.
- This research could guide future veterinary practices, potentially changing the current standard procedures to create safer, more effective rectal examinations for horses.
