A new genetic variant Z2 in the Pi system of horses.

Abstract: A new genetic variant in the horse Pi system, designated Z2, was reported in Polish Arabs by using two-dimensional agarose polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The frequencies of Pi alleles F, G, L, L2, N, S, U, W, Z and Z2 were found to be 0.036, 0.005, 0.171, 0.013, 0.008, 0.237, 0.416, 0.003, 0.107 and 0.004 respectively.

This research article reveals the identification of a new genetic variant within the Pi system of horses, specifically in Polish Arabs. This variant, named Z2, was discovered through the use of two-dimensional agarose polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, and its occurrence was found to be relatively rare, with many other Pi alleles displaying higher frequencies.

Identification of the New Z2 Genetic Variant

The researchers identified a previously unknown genetic variant, called Z2, within the Pi system, which refers to a group of genetic factors in horses. The identification of this Z2 variant is an important contribution to the field of genetic research in horses, and particularly in Polish Arabs, a breed of horse native to Poland.

  • The identification was completed using a method called two-dimensional agarose polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. This technique separates proteins, including genetic material, based on their size and charge, allowing researchers to visualize and identify different variants.
  • The discovery of the Z2 variant may prove important in understanding genetic diversity and inheritance patterns in horses, particularly for the Polish Arab breed.

Frequencies of Pi Alleles

In addition to identifying the Z2 variant, the researchers also recorded the frequencies of several other Pi alleles in the same population of horses, providing further insight into the genetic makeup of this breed.

  • There are many different Pi alleles (forms of a gene), including F, G, L, L2, N, S, U, W, Z, and the newly discovered Z2.
  • The frequency of each allele represents how common it is within the population studied. In this case, the allele with the highest frequency was U at 0.416, meaning U was the most common allele present among the tested Polish Arabs.
  • The Z2 variant had a frequency of 0.004, making it one of the least common alleles in the population.
  • This information can be valuable in breeding and conservation efforts, as it allows for a detailed understanding of the genetic diversity of the population.
