[A Saddle-Horn Injury of the Pelvis].
Abstract: A saddle-horn injury of the pelvis can be considered a separate category of injuries. They occur during horse riding, when a horse rider hits the horn of the saddle and suffers from anteroposterior compression of the pelvic ring. The hits can cause symphyseolysis or even sacroiliac joint injury, and thus also pelvic ring instability. So far, just a few articles have been published dealing with horse saddle-related injuries. Our report describes a rare case of abnormal haemorrhage in vascular anastomosis called corona mortis. The discussion part is then about appropriate treatment of such injury and the role of interventional radiology in similar injuries. Erectile dysfunction as a frequent complication in men with pelvic injuries from horse saddles requires attention, too. Key words: symphyseolysis, erectile dysfunction, saddle, pelvis, haemorrhage.

The research article discusses saddle-horn injuries of the pelvis that occur during horse riding, leading to compression of the pelvic ring that can cause injury to the sacroiliac joint or symphyseolysis. A specific case features abnormal hemorrhage in a vascular junction known as corona mortis, and the article discusses treatment of this type of injury and the role of interventional radiology.
Understanding Saddle-Horn Injuries
- Saddle-horn injuries are a distinct type of injury that occur during horse riding, especially when the rider hits the horn of the saddle. These impacts to the pelvic region can lead to anteroposterior compression of the pelvic ring.
- This compression can result in symphyseolysis, which is the loosening or separation of a symphysis – a joint where the bones are connected by a fibrocartilaginous disc.
- Alternatively, it can cause injury to the sacroiliac joint, which connects the sacrum (lower part of the spine) to the ilium of the pelvis. Both kinds of injuries can destabilize the pelvic ring.
Case Study & Treatment
- The article includes a case report involving a specific saddle-horn injury, which caused abnormal haemorrhage in the vascular anastomosis known as corona mortis — a potentially life-threatening situation.
- The authors discuss the appropriate treatment of this kind of injury and underline the importance of interventional radiology in managing similar injuries.
- Interventional radiology involves using medical imaging techniques to guide minimally invasive surgical procedures, which can be effective in treating injuries where bleeding control is critical.
Frequent Complications & Further Research
- The researchers also highlight that erectile dysfunction is a common complication in men who have suffered pelvic injuries from horse saddles, suggesting further attention is needed in this area.
- A limited number of articles have been published specifically on horse saddle-related injuries, indicating an opportunity for further research into the prevalence, specific injury patterns, treatment, and long-term outcomes of these kinds of injuries.
