Abnormalities of mating behaviour in domestic stallions.

Abstract: Experimental and clinical observations were made to treat abnormal sexual behaviour. The most common cause of abnormality was mismanagement of the animal; over-use and rough treatment at service and too-frequent ejaculation during winter had a detrimental effect on the behaviour of young stallions. Pain due to injury incurred at copulation or when associated with mounting attempts was also a common cause of impotence. Most impotent stallions responded well to re-training and recovery can be achieved without pharmacological treatment in most cases.

The research article discusses various causes of abnormal mating behaviour in domestic stallions, the most common cause being mismanagement, and suggests that most issues can be resolved without pharmacological treatment, instead relying on retraining.

Overview of the Research

  • The article delves into the abnormal mating behavior observed in domestic stallions. The researchers carry out both experimental and clinical observations to ascertain the root of the abnormal sexual behavior and come up with appropriate remedies.

Main Findings of the Study

  • The article identifies the improper handling of the animal, particularly overuse and rough treatment at service, as the most common cause of deviant behavior. When stallions are forced to frequently ejaculate, especially during winter, it has been observed to negatively impact their behavior, particularly in younger stallions.
  • Pain due to injuries incurred during mating or while trying to mount could also be a major cause of abnormal mating behavior. Such injuries can lead to impotence in stallions and affect their mating capabilities adversely.

Solutions and Observations

  • As per the article, most of the impotent stallions responded positively to re-training. The results suggest that the abnormal mating behavior can be corrected by using non-pharmacological methods.
  • This gives an indication that the primary cause of such behavior is not inherent but rather a consequence of external factors, mostly related to management and treatment of the animals.
  • The article thus indicates that most cases do not necessarily require pharmacological treatment. Instead, a more reasonable and practical solution lies in improving the handling and management of these animals while also providing necessary training whenever required.
