Acyclicity and dyscyclicity in mares.

This study focuses on the reproductive health issues in mares and the effectiveness of various treatment options. Out of 356 studied mares, 21.9% had functional disorders of the ovaries, which were treated using different methods, leading to varying degrees of success in inducing oestrus and resulting pregnancies.

Study Overview

• The research was conducted on two trotter stud farms where 356 mares were bred during 1972 and 1973. The mares consisted of 194 nursing, 113 barren, and 49 maiden mares.
• Functional disorders of ovaries were found in 78 mares (21.9%). This classification included mares that had anoestrous after early embryonic death, low ovarian activity, multifollicular ovaries, or persistent corpora lutea.

Treatment Strategies

• Various therapies were administered to the mares, including PMSG and stilboestrol; intra-uterine infusion of physiological saline solution; oral administration of Chlormadinone acetate; intra-uterine administration of Prostaglandin F2alpha; and curettage of the uterus.

Effectiveness of Treatments

• The treatment strategies showed varying degrees of success: PMSG and stilboestrol had a 23.1% success rate in bringing mares into heat with all of them becoming pregnant in the first oestrus; the saline solution resulted in 73.1% of mares coming into oestrus and 53.1% becoming pregnant; Chlormadinone acetate resulted in 92.4% of treated mares coming into oestrus with 57.9% becoming pregnant; prostaglandin led to all treated mares coming into heat with 88.9% becoming pregnant; and none of the mares improved with the curettage treatment.

Overall Results

• In total, 54.7% of the treated mares became pregnant in the first oestrus after treatment. And after one or more breedings, 76.9% of the mares became pregnant.
