[Alder buckthorn poisoning in horses].

Abstract: Seven cases of poisoning in horses are reported. This was caused by ingestion of branches of the alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus (mill.) syn. Rhamnus frangula L.), which had been thrown on the pasture. The biological characteristics and the toxic action of the plant are discussed more fully.

The research article presents a study on seven cases of poisoning in horses, which was caused by the animals consuming branches of the alder buckthorn plant that had been discarded within reach.

About the Alder Buckthorn

  • The research paper discusses the biological characteristics and the toxic action of the Alder buckthorn (Frangula alnus (mill.) syn. Rhamnus frangula L.). This plant is known to be harmful to animals, especially horses, when ingested.

Methodology and Findings

  • The cases presented in the paper involve seven horses ingesting branches of the Alder buckthorn plant. The branches had mistakenly been discarded on a pasture where the horses were grazing, leading to accidental consumption.
  • The paper suggests this poisoning was not a one-off occurrence, based on the number of cases reported to them, indicating a need for preventative measures and increased awareness among owners and caregivers.

Significance of the Study

  • This study highlights the dangers of Alder buckthorn, particularly its branches, to horses.
  • Essentially, the paper stresses on the importance of ensuring that such toxic plants are disposed of properly, away from grazing areas, to prevent accidental ingestion by horses and other animals.
