Assessment of oxidative stress biomarkers in exhaled breath condensate and blood of Thoroughbred foals.
Abstract: This study reports preliminary data on systemic and local biomarkers of oxidative stress (OS) in Thoroughbred foals. Blood and exhaled breath condensate (EBC) were sampled from 13 foals on two farms. Values of reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), biological antioxidant potential (BAP), antioxidant barrier (OXY-ads), thiol antioxidant barrier (SHp) and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs) were determined in blood, while EBC samples were assayed for hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) levels. Systemic and local OS biomarkers did not differ between farms and gender. Increased oxidative stress index (OSI) values in a foal recovering from pneumonia and elevated H(2)O(2) in EBC coupled with low SHp and elevated AOPPs in the blood of a foal with overt upper respiratory tract disease suggested that the OS markers measured in this study may relate to the respiratory health status of foals.

The study examines the stress biomarkers in the blood and exhaled breath of Thoroughbred foals, and how they might be linked to the respiratory health of these animals. No significant difference was reported between farms and gender.
Biomarkers of Oxidative Stress
- In this study, the researchers are investigating markers of oxidative stress (OS), which is a form of cellular stress caused by high levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
- Different biomarkers were studied including reactive oxygen metabolites (d-ROMs), biological antioxidant potential (BAP), antioxidant barrier (OXY-ads), thiol antioxidant barrier (SHp), and advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs).
- These markers are involved in various cellular processes and their imbalance could give insights into the health status of an animal.
Blood and Exhaled Breath Condensate Sampling
- Samples were collected from blood and exhaled breath condensate (EBC) in 13 foals from two different farms.
- Different markers were assessed in these samples. For example, levels of H(2)O(2), a type of ROS, were specifically measured in the EBC samples.
Findings and Implications
- The study found no significant differences in the oxidative stress biomarkers between the foals from different farms or between sexes. This suggests that external factors like environment or gender do not significantly affect these biomarkers.
- However, a notable observation was made in a foal recovering from pneumonia and another one presenting with upper respiratory tract disease. Increased oxidative stress index (OSI) values were found in the pneumonia-recovering foal, while elevated H(2)O(2) levels in EBC, lower SHp levels and higher AOPPs were detected in the blood of the foal with the respiratory disease.
- This indicates that the oxidative stress markers measured may correlate with the respiratory health status of foals. However, this observation needs to be validated with larger studies.
