[Associations between the coat color and the blood-group system D antigens in horses].
Abstract: The study of the association between the coat-color variants and the blood-group system D antigens in the populations of two related trotter breeds (Orlov Trotter and Russian Trotter) showed the presence of three associations between these characters in the Orlov Trotter breed. In the populations of Russian trotters, these associations were not detected. Possible reasons for the formation and maintenance of these associations and the role of the selection for coat color in the differentiation of breeds by the frequencies of some system D antigens are discussed.

This study explored the link between coat color and the blood-group system D antigens in Orlov and Russian Trotter horse breeds, finding the presence of three associations in the former but none in the latter. Potential explanations for these associations and the role of color-based selection affecting the differentiation of breed frequencies for certain system D antigens are discussed.
Study Objectives and Design
- The primary aim of the research paper was to investigate the possible correlations or associations between the coat-color variations and the blood-group system D antigens in Orlov Trotter and Russian Trotter horse breeds.
- The study was designed to reveal these possible associations in two closely related trotter breeds. Furthermore, it aimed to discuss the potential reasons behind the formation and maintenance of these associations, notably in relation to how selective breeding for coat color might influence the differentiation between breeds regarding the frequencies of certain system D antigens.
Key Findings
- The research found three distinct associations between coat color and system D antigens in the Orlov Trotter breed. This implies that there is some genetic or evolutionary connection between coat color and blood antigen in this breed that is not randomly established.
- However, the study failed to detect these associations in the Russian Trotter breed, signifying a variance between these two related trotter breeds regarding the degree to which coat color is linked to system D antigens.
Importance and Potential Implications
- The study’s findings have potential implications in the field of equine genetics and breeding. If the coat color and traits like blood-group antigens are indeed correlated, breeders and geneticists might need to consider this when planning their breeding programs, particularly if the traits in question have health or performance effects.
- The study also has ramifications for understanding the evolutionary processes that might drive such associations. By probing why the associations exist in Orlov Trotters but not in Russian Trotters, scientists might gain insight into the genetic pressures and evolution within these breeds.
- The connections found in this paper can be a starting point for further investigation into the potential impact of selective breeding for aesthetic traits (e.g., coat color) on other biological traits.
