Bacteria in enteric lesions of horses.
Abstract: Thirty-three species of bacteria were isolated from the gastrointestinal mucosa of 23 adult horses and two foals. The bacteria isolated could be related to gross and microscopical lesions in some cases. Clostridium perfringens type A, Actinobacillus equuli, Salmonella typhimurium and Campylobacter coli biotype 1 could all be associated with gastrointestinal lesions. C jejuni biotype 1 and Aeromonas hydrophila were both recovered in this study and have been identified as causes of enteritis in horses or in other species. The case of C coli enteritis appears to be the first such report. The difficulties in examining adult horses with enteritis and relating the lesions seen to the bacteria isolated are discussed.

This research knows the range of bacterial strains found on the gastrointestinal mucosa (innermost layer) of 25 horses, highlighting possible links between these bacteria and gastrointestinal lesions. Particularly, the study found associations between strains such as Clostridium perfringens type A, Actinobacillus equuli, Salmonella typhimurium and Campylobacter coli with gastrointestinal issues.
Species of Bacteria found in Horses
- The study identified 33 different types of bacteria in the gastrointestinal mucosa of 23 adult horses and two foals.
- This demonstrates the diverse bacterial ecosystem present in the gut of horses, which may have various impacts on their health.
Link between Bacteria and Gastrointestinal Lesions
- In some cases, researchers established associations between the bacteria isolated and visible and microscopical lesions in the horses’ gastrointestinal system.
- Specifically, the bacteria Clostridium perfringens type A, Actinobacillus equuli, Salmonella typhimurium, and Campylobacter coli biotype 1 were all found in conjunction with gastrointestinal lesions.
Causes of Enteritis in Horses
- The study also discussed the presence of C jejuni biotype 1 and Aeromonas hydrophila, which have previously been known to cause inflammation of the intestines (enteritis) in horses and other species.
- This provided valuable knowledge for understanding and identifying causes of gastrointestinal problems in horses.
First Report of C coli Enteritis
- The research contained the inaugural report of C coli causing enteritis, extending our understanding of the potential impact this bacterium can have on equine health.
Difficulties in Relating Bacteria to Lesions
- The researchers also discussed challenges inherent in examining adult horses with enteritis and correlating the lesions observed to the bacteria isolated.
- This is due to the complexities of the gastrointestinal system and the diverse interactions between the numerous bacteria present.
