[Biochemical and hematological changes in the blood of horses after the “Velká Pardubická” steeple chase].

This study focuses on understanding the changes in blood parameters in horses after they participated in the “Velká Pardubická” steeple-chase races. The findings point towards a noticeable increase in some sporting parameters and a significant decline in others, suggesting the need for thorough examination during training sessions to evaluate horses’ condition before challenging races.

Research Objective and Methodology

• The objective of the research was to monitor and analyze any biochemical and hematological changes in the blood parameters of horses after they participated in the “Velká Pardubická” steeple-chase races.
• For this study, blood parameters were evaluated in two groups of horses participating in the steeple-chase races over three consecutive years – 1974, 1975, and 1976.
• The parameters studied included lactate, glucose, sodium, potassium, haemoglobin levels, haematocrit value, number of erythrocytes (red blood cells), pH levels (acid-base balance), base excess, and bicarbonate levels.

Findings

• Post-race, the levels of lactate showed a manifold surge, indicating a high level of physical exertion in horses during the race.
• In addition to lactate, there were increases in the levels of glucose, sodium, potassium, haemoglobin, haematocrit value, and erythrocytes as well, suggesting metabolic changes due to intense physical activity.
• On the contrary, parameters such as pH levels, base excess, and bicarbonate levels experienced a significant drop after the race. This could perhaps be linked to alterations in normal body functions due to rigorous exertion.
• Furthermore, it was established that the values of these parameters in horses during regular training sessions were incomparably lower. This implies that the intensity of the physical activity during the races could be directly responsible for these notable changes.

Recommendations and Conclusion

• The study suggests that thorough examinations of horses should be conducted during training sessions. These assessments could provide valuable insights into the horses’ physical condition and readiness for demanding races.
