Blood types and antibody profiles of Straight Egyptian Arabian horses in Qatar: Preliminary results.

Findings of the Study

• The research discovered that all investigated horses (100%) have Aa and Ca blood types (with a 95% confidence interval of 83.2% to 100%).
• Other less common blood types found were Ua (50%), Qc (45%), Pa (40%), Qb (25%), and Qa (5%).
• The study also revealed that only those horses with a travel history developed anti-red blood cells antibodies, with 6 out of 9 such horses having these antibodies. None of the horses carried more than one type of these antibodies, implying that environmental factors can contribute to the development of these alloantibodies.

Implications of the Study

• Despite the preference for pre-transfusion testing in all scenarios, the findings propose that Straight Egyptian Arabian horses in Qatar could be effectively utilised as blood donors.
• This is primarily due to the prevalent presence of the Aa and Ca blood types among these horses, along with a lower occurrence of alloantibodies. Both these factors are highly beneficial in those cases where pre-transfusion testing isn’t possible due to time constraints or other reasons.
• The results of this study could potentially help save equine lives during medical emergencies where immediate blood transfusion is necessary.
