Bronchoscopy and cytological examination of bronchial secretions of horses with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Abstract: On the basis of cytological similarities in chronic obstructive disease (COPD) in human beings and in horses during 1981 a total number of 144 horses with COPD were examined. Bronchial secretions were taken under endoscopic control and stained with a modified Hansel staining procedure. Whereas 26 horses did not exhibit signs of allergic reactions cytologically and 94 horses showed low amounts of eosinocytes and/or mast cells in their secretion; only the secretions of 24 horses (16,67%) were characterized by fairly high contents of these allergy associated cells and low numbers of neutrophilic granulocytes.

The study aims to understand the cytological similarities in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) between humans and horses, through the examination of bronchial secretions gathered from 144 horses with COPD during the year 1981.

Methodology

  • The researchers take bronchial secretions from 144 horses suffering from COPD, under endoscopic control, which means using a flexible tube with a light and camera attached to it, inserted into the horses’ airways to visually examine them and collect samples.
  • The collected samples are stained with a modified Hansel staining procedure. This is a specific staining technique used to make certain components in the cells more visible under the microscope, aiding accurate identification and analysis.

Results

  • The research identified that 26 out of 144 horses did not exhibit signs of allergic reactions on a cellular level. This was deduced via minute observation and analysis of the stained cells from their bronchial secretion.
  • 94 out of the same group exhibited low amounts of eosinocytes and/or mast cells in their secretion. Eosinocytes and mast cells are types of white blood cells that are typically increased when there’s an allergic reaction or inflammation happening in the body.
  • Interestingly, secretions from only 24 horses, which constitutes 16.67% of the studied group, were characterized by fairly high contents of these allergy-associated cells (eosinocytes and mast cells) and low numbers of neutrophilic granulocytes, another type of white blood cell which also plays a crucial role in body’s immune response.

Significance

  • The result from this study suggests a diversity in allergic reaction presentation amongst horses affected by COPD, demonstrated by varying cell profiles in their bronchial secretions. This could imply a need to evaluate COPD in horses on a more individualized basis, rather than assuming a uniform pathology across all cases.
  • This research also draws attention to the cytological similarities between human and equine (horse) COPD, warranting further studies that might help understand the disease better in both species.
