Cellular and Matrix Dynamics of the Equine Tendon.
Abstract: Our understanding of tendon homeostasis and repair following injury has made great strides through basic science, clinical veterinary medicine, and preclinical translational research. We have now gleaned a greater understanding of the cellular and matrix dynamics that are being orchestrated within the tendon, which provide therapeutic opportunities. This article will focus on how utilizing the horse and equine tissues have advanced our understanding of tendinopathy and the cellular and matrix dynamics at play while also identifying continued gaps in our knowledge where the horse as a veterinary patient and preclinical model could advance our understanding of tendon biology.

The research article discusses the advancements in understanding of the cellular and matrix dynamics of tendons, particularly of horses, and how these advancements have improved our methods of treating tendon injuries.
Understanding of Tendon Homeostasis and Repair
- The study begins by addressing the progress made in our comprehension of tendon homeostasis (the process by which healthy tendons maintain their structure and function) and how tendons repair themselves after injury. Knowledge in these areas has grown significantly through basic science studies, veterinary medicine, and preclinical translational research (applying laboratory findings to treatments on actual patients).
Cellular and Matrix Dynamics of the Tendon
- This paper focuses on the internal dynamics of tendons, particularly the roles of cells and the extracellular matrix (a network of non-cellular components present within all tissues and organs that provide necessary biochemical and structural support for cells). The authors have aimed to understand the complex interaction between these dynamics, which inform the function and healing capacity of tendons.
Role of Equine Studies in Understanding Tendinopathy
- Equine studies play a significant role in this research, given the similar physiological characteristics of human and equine tendons. The research indicates that horses’ tendons advance our understanding of tendinopathy, a condition causing pain, swelling, and impaired performance of tendons.
- Horse tendons have been studied both from veterinary patients and as part of preclinical models in order to expand the understanding of tendon biology. Studies involving horses have been instrumental in identifying and filling gaps in our knowledge about tendons.
