Citrobacter freundii induced endocarditis in a yearling colt.
Abstract: Endocarditis is a rare pathology in horses and the clinical signs can be misleading. We describe the clinical, echocardiographic, and pathological features of Citrobacter freundii induced bacterial endocarditis in a horse. This bacterium has never been reported before as an agent of vegetative endocarditis in the horse.

The research paper discusses a rare case of endocarditis in a horse, caused by the Citrobacter freundii bacteria – a pathogen never before reported as a cause of this disease in a horse.
Research Context
- This study explores a rare case of endocarditis in a colt, or young horse, caused by the bacterium Citrobacter freundii.
- Endocarditis, an inflammation of the inner layer of the heart, seldom affects horses and their clinical signs can often mislead.
- The specific bacterial agent in this case, Citrobacter freundii, has never before been implicated in causing endocarditis in horses.
Procedure
- The research expounds on the clinical, echocardiographic (using ultrasound to visualize the heart), and pathological characteristics of this case.
- Despite the rarity of such cases in horses, a comprehensive diagnosis procedure was undertaken, highlighting the importance of clinical vigilance in veterinary practice.
Implication of the Research
- The study underscores the potential role of Citrobacter freundii as an agent of endocarditis in horses.
- This discovery broadens the current knowledge on the typical pathogens responsible for endocarditis in horses, which can contribute to earlier detection, more effective treatment, and overall better understanding of the disease.
Conclusion
- This research illustrates how a certain bacterium (Citrobacter freundii) can induce an uncommon type of heart disease (endocarditis) in horses.
- This finding is significant as it is the first to link this bacterium to this disease in horses, hence contributes to improved veterinary diagnostics and treatment of endocarditis.
