Clinical, Ultrasonographic, and Arthroscopic Characteristics of Hair Shafts Within Synovial Structures of Seven Horses.

This research study investigates the ultrasonographic characteristics of hair shafts discovered within the synovial structures (joints or tendons) of seven horses and validates the use of ultrasound as a diagnostic method for this condition, often associated with inflammation or infection.

Objective of the Study

• A chief aim of this study was to describe the clinical, ultrasonographic, and arthroscopic features of hair shafts within the synovial structures of horses, an area which has not seen previous detailed examination.
• It also sought to reinforce the significance of ultrasonography as a supportive diagnostic measure when there is suspicion of such foreign material causing infection or inflammation in horses.

Methodology

• The researchers used medical records from the Farm and Equine Veterinary Medical Center at North Carolina State University College of Veterinary Medicine to identify seven horses that had displayed clinical signs suggesting inflammatory or septic synovitis/tenosynovitis (joint or tendon inflammation/infection).
• These were the cases where the presence of hair shafts within the synovial structures had been detected using ultrasound.
• The findings from the ultrasound examination were then confirmed via surgical arthroscopy, bursoscopy, tenoscopy, or necropsy to cement the accuracy of the ultrasonographic results.

Findings

• The ultrasound revealed unique characteristics of intrasynovial hair shafts which appeared as thin, linear, and hyperechoic (highly reflective) structures. Importantly, these structures did not cast acoustic shadows which is a significant indicator for the presence of foreign objects in soft tissue imaging.
• These findings provided crucial support for the idea of utilising ultrasonography as a supplementary diagnostic tool when suspecting the presence of intrasynovial hair shafts potentially causing signs of synovitis/tenosynovitis in horses.
