Conditioned suppression of sexual behavior in stallions and reversal with diazepam.
Abstract: Sexual behavior dysfunction unaccompanied by detectable physical or endocrine abnormality is an important cause of reproductive failure among domestic stallions. Several authors have suggested that such dysfunction may be psychogenic, related to negative experience associated with intense handling and training. An experimental model of experience-related dysfunction was developed by exposing pony stallions to erection-contingent aversive conditioning. This resulted in rapid, specific suppression of sexual arousal and response similar to spontaneously occurring dysfunction. Subsequently, treatment with a CNS-active benzodiazepine derivative (diazepam) reversed these effects.

The research article explores how sexual behavior dysfunction in stallions, unconnected with physical or endocrine malfunction, could potentially be related to negative experiences during intense handling and training. Through experimental models, the researchers established that sexual arousal and response could be suppressed. The application of diazepam, a benzodiazepine derivative, however, was found to reverse these effects.
Overview of Study
- The study sought to explore the cause behind sexual behavior dysfunction in domestic stallions that is not attributable to any detectable physical or endocrine abnormality. The researchers hypothesized that these dysfunctions might be psychogenic, meaning they might be related to negative experiences associated with intense handling and training.
Methodology
- The research team developed an experimental model where pony stallions were subjected to erection-contingent aversive conditioning. This type of conditioning is designed to create a negative experience in response to a particular stimulus – in this case, erections in stallions.
Findings
- The study discovered that this conditioning results in a rapid, specific suppression of sexual arousal and response. These results are similar to what is observed in the spontaneously occurring dysfunction, supporting the idea that sexual behavior dysfunction in these animals can indeed be psychogenic in nature.
Treatment Development
- Having established the negative effect of the aversive conditioning, the researchers then investigated ways to counteract it. They discovered that treatment with a benzodiazepine derivative, diazepam, known to affect central nervous system, could reverse these effects.
- This offers potential new routes for treating such psychogenic sexual behavior dysfunctions in stallions. Further research would however be needed to confirm these findings and to develop appropriate treatment protocols.
