Contribution of delta bilirubin to the interpretation of hyperbilirubinemia in the horse – a pilot study.
Abstract: A study was conducted to examine the relationship of delta bilirubin to traditional bilirubin fractions to determine if delta bilirubin might assist in differentiating causes of hyperbilirubinemia in the horse. A recently introduced thin-film method was used for delta bilirubin determination. Thin-film and the traditional diazo methods were used for determining total, unconjugated, and conjugated bilirubin fractions. Sera from 38 healthy and 85 sick horses were examined.Thin-film serum delta bilirubin determination does not appear to assist in differentiating causes of unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in horses. There was good correlation between thin-film and diazo-determined total bilirubin and bilirubin fractions. Only small changes in reference limits would appear to be necessary for clinical application of the thin-film bilirubin methods used in this study.

This research study investigated whether delta bilirubin could help with determining causes of elevated bilirubin levels in horses. However, the study found no significant contribution of delta bilirubin as an identifying factor in these cases.
Objective of the Research
- The main goal of this research study was to understand if delta bilirubin, a type of bilirubin, could serve as a factor in differentiating the reasons behind increased bilirubin levels (hyperbilirubinemia) in horses.
Methodology
- The study utilized a thin-film method to gauge the levels of delta bilirubin. This is a recently introduced methodology for determining delta bilirubin.
- For calculating total, unconjugated, and conjugated bilirubin fractions, the researchers used both the traditional diazo methods and thin-film methods.
- In total, the serum samples from 38 healthy horses and 85 sick horses were tested for conducting the study.
Findings
- The study did not find the thin-film serum delta bilirubin determination to offer any extra assistance in diagnosing the causes behind unconjugated hyperbilirubinemia in horses.
- However, the research discovered a significant correlation between the total bilirubin and bilirubin fractions calculated through the thin-film and diazo methods. This finding suggests that both methods are equally effective in determining these values.
- The study findings suggest only minor alterations are necessary in the reference limits or standards to make the thin-film bilirubin methods applicable in a clinical setup.
