Critical tests of morantel-trichlorfon paste formulation against internal parasites of the horse.

Abstract: Critical tests were completed on six horses to evaluate the antiparasitic activity of a paste formulation mixture of morantel citrate and trichlorfon, administered intraorally at the dose rate of 6 mg morantel base kg-1 and trichlorfon at 30 mg kg-1. Aggregate average removals were: 78% for two horses infected with 2nd instar Gasterophilus intestinalis; 100% for one infected with 2nd instar G. nasalis; 96% for six infected with 3rd instar G. intestinalis; 100% for four infected with 3rd instar G. nasalis; 100% for five infected with Parascaris equorum; 100% for one infected with mature Oxyuris equi; 100% for five infected with Strongylus vulgaris; 72% for five infected with S. edentatus; and partial removal (25%) of Anoplocephala perfoliata infection from one infected animal. Pre- and post-treatment EPG and LPG data indicated a reduction of 97% of the mature small strongyle infections. Evidence of toxicosis was not observed in any of the horses.

Summary

This research summary has been generated with artificial intelligence and may contain errors and omissions. Refer to the original study to confirm details provided. Submit correction.

The research tests a paste formulation of morantel citrate and trichlorfon in horses for its effectiveness against various types of internal parasites and found it to be generally successful with no signs of toxicosis observed.

Research Methodology

  • The researchers conducted critical tests on six horses using a blend of morantel citrate and trichlorfon, given orally.
  • The dosage rate was fixed at 6 mg of morantel base per kg and trichlorfon at 30 mg per kg.
  • Tests were performed for a variety of infestations, including different instars of Gasterophilus intestinalis and G. nasalis, Parascaris equorum, mature Oxyuris equi, Strongylus vulgaris and S. edentatus, and Anoplocephala perfoliata.
  • The impact of the treatment was determined through pre- and post-treatment egg per gram (EPG) and larvae per gram (LPG) data.

Key Findings

  • Results showed variable degrees of successful removal of parasites. For example, two horses infected with 2nd instar Gasterophilus intestinalis showed 78% removal, while full removal was observed in cases of 2nd instar G. nasalis, Parascaris equorum, mature Oxyuris equi, and Strongylus vulgaris.
  • The formulation was less effective against S. edentatus, yielding 72% removal. The least successful removal was reported against Anoplocephala perfoliata, showing only partial removal (25%).
  • Overall, post-treatment data showed a significant reduction of 97% of the mature small strongyle infections.
  • Importantly, no evidence of toxicosis was observed in any of the horses tested, indicating the safety of the formulation for the horses.

Conclusion

  • The paste of morantel citrate and trichlorfon demonstrated substantial effectiveness in controlling a range of common and important endoparasites in horses.
  • Its usage could potentially lead to improved health among horses, particularly those where such infestations are common or persistent.
  • The safety of this treatment, as demonstrated by the lack of toxicosis among the subjects, also suggests it could be a preferred option.
