Cutaneous fungal granulomas due to Alternaria spp. infection in a horse in New Zealand.
Abstract: Equine cutaneous fungal granulomas have been previously referred to in New Zealand (Fairley 1998), and are described in the veterinary literature from around the world, including North America and Australia (Pascoe and Summers 1981; Genovese et al. 2001; Valentine et al. 2006), but no peer-reviewed reports appear published in the literature in New Zealand. Described here is a case of multiple cutaneous fungal granulomas caused by Alternaria spp. in a horse in New Zealand.

The research article is about a case of multiple cutaneous fungal granulomas caused by Alternaria spp. infection in a horse which took place in New Zealand, despite a lack of such previous cases in local literature.
Introduction
The report introduces the phenomenon of equine cutaneous fungal granulomas, a condition that has been referenced before in New Zealand’s medical history, but had previously lacked peer-reviewed accounts within local literature. Despite this, these cutaneous fungal granulomas in horses have been well-documented around the world, as demonstrated by references to vet medical literature from North America and Australia.
Case Report
- The main focus of the study is to present a case of multiple cutaneous fungal granulomas due to Alternaria spp. infection in a horse located in New Zealand.
- Alternaria spp., a type of fungus, is established as the causative agent behind the granulomas, irregular growths normally associated with inflammation or some form of infection.
Significance
- This case study’s primary significance lies in the fact that it appears to be the first documented, peer-reviewed account of such a condition within New Zealand’s veterinary literature.
- Furthermore, given the global literature on the topic, it’s also a valuable contribution to a broader understanding of equine cutaneous fungal granulomas, especially in terms of the possible role of Alternaria spp.
