Cutaneous pythiosis in horses from Brazil.
Abstract: Equine pythiosis was studied in five animals from two farms located in a swampy region of southern Brazil (Rio Grande do Sul State). Granulomatous lesions exuding necrotic material and containing a central yellow and firm tissue core, the 'kunker', were observed on the top of the nose of one horse, on the abdomen of two horses and on the hind limbs of two other animals. Direct microscopic preparations, histopathological examination of lesion material, and macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the isolates confirmed the diagnosis of pythiosis. Surgical intervention of the inflammatory processes, intravenous potassium iodide and topical application of copper sulphate were used without success.

This research paper outlines a study on a disease called equine pythiosis that was observed in five horses from swampy areas of southern Brazil. The paper provide insights on the symptoms, diagnosis as well as ineffective treatment methods used.
Disease and Study Locale
- The study focuses on equine pythiosis, a disease that affects horses. It primarily appears in the skin and subcutaneous tissues.
- The study was conducted on two farms located in the swampy regions of Rio Grande do Sul State which is located in the southern area of Brazil.
Symptoms & Diagnosis
- Various symptoms were observed in the five horses that were studied.
- Some of these symptoms included granulomatous lesions (an inflamed nodule) exuding necrotic (dead) material and central yellow firm tissue core also known as ‘kunker’.
- The symptoms were observed in specific areas – on the nose of one horse, the abdomen of two and on the hind limbs of two other animals.
- The diagnosis of pythiosis was confirmed through a combination of methods including direct microscopic preparations, macroscopic and microscopic characteristics of the isolates and histopathological examination of the lesion material.
Treatment
- The research paper also mentions the treatment mechanisms used to deal with this disease.
- These included surgical interventions targeted at the inflammatory processes, use of intravenous potassium iodide, and topical application of copper sulphate.
- However, as per the findings of the research, these treatments were not successful.
